Fiddler Phil Salazar and guitarist Jonathan McEuen (son of Nitty Gritty
Dirt Band founding member John McEuen) are the inspired persons behind this tribute
project. This is a West Coast bluegrass/Americana rendering of, for the most part, Jerry
Garcia songs and, from start to finish, this CD has a fine, mellow groove that gets in
your head right away and definitely makes itself at home. Tunes like
"Casey Jones" (the song that will never die), "The Wheel,"
"Deal," "China Cat Sunflower," "Eyes of the World," and
"I Know You Rider" are presented with loving care by Salazar and McEuen and
numerous contributors, including McEuen's dad, Johnny Koutzoukis, Rick Borella, Bill
Flores, and Daphne Jones. The album opens with a wonderfully understated cover of
"Tennessee Jed," set off by Salazar's fluent fiddle, that just smiles at the
listener. The song does everything but offer you a seat on the sofa. There's
some good pickin' going on here. Betcha Garcia would have liked this album a lot.
